“Princess” Alice was the public’s favorite of all the Roosevelt children, and her marriage to Nicholas Longworth was not just a wedding, but a full-blown media event.

The Bull Moose campaign split the Republican party and gave the election to the Democrat, Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey. At the beginning of the campaign, Theodore said he did not expect to win but was making the challenge in order to influence the party for the future. In Milwaukee, in October, while leaving for a speech, Theodore was shot in the chest by a would-be assassin. In typical Roosevelt fashion, he went on with his address, his shirt drenched in blood. The bullet had been slowed by the manuscript of his speech, which was in his coat pocket, but it had penetrated the wall of his chest and damaged a rib. Edith was told of the assassination attempt while attending the opera in New York. She left immediately for Milwaukee, where she joined Theodore in the hospital and stayed with him until his release.

Theodore’s third-party candidacy severely damaged his credibility in the Republican party. Had he let Taft go down to defeat in 1912, the party may well have turned to him in 1916, and he most likely would have won against Wilson. But he was now anathema to traditional Republicans, who controlled the party, at least in the short run. As he had done before, he consoled himself with a long trip, this time into the Amazon rain forest of Brazil. Once again, Edith was left alone for months as her husband risked his life.
